Freedom Day, the series’ festival: red lanterns rise up the stairwell to mark a rebellion put down some 140 years before.

Silo, season 1
Ten episodes from the first half of Wool: a sheriff goes out, a mechanic comes up, and a dead man’s secret runs the silo ragged.
Apple TV+’s Silo premiered on May 5, 2023 with two episodes, then ran weekly on Fridays to its finale on June 30: ten episodes, developed and run by Graham Yost from Hugh Howey’s books. It covers less of the book than it seems to: in Yost’s words, “season one is just the first half of ‘Wool.’” In novella terms that is Holston, Proper Gauge, Casting Off and the first pages of The Unraveling, ending where Juliette walks out of sight over the hill.
The shape is the book’s, stretched. The series kills both of its apparent leads by the second episode, much as Wool spends its first hero in its first novella, then walks Juliette up from the generator to the sheriff’s office and keeps her there for most of the season, building a detective story on a dead man the book barely sketches. It also holds back the book’s first great reveal, that the green world lives in the cleaner’s visor, until the last minutes of the finale.
Each episode below says which part of Wool it draws on and what the series changed or added. The frames paint the series’ version of each moment, its concrete stair, emerald tiles and red lanterns, in the walk’s own charcoal; they show characters, never performers.
Episode 1
Freedom Day
Sheriff Holston Becker locks himself in his own cell and tells Deputy Sam Marnes he wants to go out. Then the pilot goes back three years. Holston and his wife Allison, who works in IT, are granted a year to conceive, her implant out for 365 days, and a fertility counselor, Gloria Hildebrandt, plants doubts. On Freedom Day, the silo’s festival for a rebellion put down some 140 years before, Allison helps George Wilkins, a computer man in the Mids, open a forbidden hard drive. When the year runs out she shows Holston the implant the doctor only pretended to remove, cut out of her own body. In the cafeteria she tells the silo the screen is a lie and she wants to go out. She cleans, smiling, and dies on the hill. Two years later George is found dead at level 120, and Holston walks down to the generator to meet an engineer who calls it murder: Juliette Nichols.
From Wool: Part 1, Holston: the cell, the year’s chance with the implant out, Allison’s digging in deleted files, her public “I want to go out” (at the airlock, in the book). Her promise in the book is bigger:
“If that hill is there and it’s green, we’ll go over it together.”
The festival, Gloria, the faked removal and the drive are the series’. So is George alive: in Wool he is a mechanic Juliette loved, dead before the story starts.
S1 · 1 The Sheriff in His Own Cell Sheriff Holston Becker locks himself into his own holding cell, throws the key into the corridor, points at the wall monitor and tells Deputy Sam Marnes he wants to go out. The pilot opens where Wool opens, then spends most of its hour three years back with the wife whose body lies on that hill.S1 · 2 A Drive Older Than the Rebellion On Freedom Day Allison answers a service call in the Mids and helps George Wilkins open a forbidden hard drive older than the rebellion. It holds a mass of files; on a later visit the two open one called “Jane Carmody Cleaning”. Wool’s Allison digs through deleted files on her own computer; the drive, and George alive to share it, are the series’ seed for everything that follows.S1 · 3 The Mechanic at the Generator Two years after Allison’s cleaning, George is found dead at level 120 and called a suicide. Holston and Marnes walk all the way down to the generator, where an engineer named Juliette Nichols insists it was murder. Wool introduces her later, through the mayor’s eyes; the series gives her the pilot’s last minutes, already at odds with the law.
Episode 2
Holston’s Pick
Holston goes out. Through his visor the hills are green under a sky full of birds; he cleans the lens, walks toward Allison, takes off his helmet and dies beside her. In flashback Juliette, George’s secret lover, leads Holston down a hidden tunnel to George’s camp beneath the silo, where they find the drive and notes in Allison’s hand. He promises her a signal when he finds something; she hears nothing more, but he leaves a written nomination: Juliette as his successor. Mayor Ruth Jahns decides to walk down all 144 levels to meet her. Juliette ropes down into the flooded dig below the camp, hunting a door George saw on old plans.
From Wool: the end of Holston, except that the book shows what Holston sees with the helmet off: a dead brown hill, and a “boulder” that is his wife. The series saves that for the finale, on a suggestion Yost credits to Apple’s Max Aronson: “Hey, what if we didn’t reveal that until the end, so that’s a mystery, too?” In Wool it is Marnes who picks Juliette, and she and Holston had crossed paths only over George’s death. Yost: “that was one line in the book, and we made a season out of it.”
S1 · 4 Holston Goes Out Through his visor the world is just as Allison promised: grass, blue sky, birds. Holston cleans the lens so the silo can see, walks toward her, takes off his helmet and dies beside her. Wool shows the reader the truth he sees with the helmet off; the series keeps that view back until the finale, so that Juliette, and the audience, find it together.S1 · 5 George’s Camp The sheriff already knows George was Juliette’s lover; she trusts him with the rest, a relic and a note George left her. She leads Holston down hidden tunnels to George’s camp beneath the silo, beside a giant old machine she believes built it, and there they find his drive and notes in Allison’s hand. In Wool the two had crossed paths only over George’s death; this alliance is the series’ own.
Episode 3
Machines
Jahns and Marnes start down. Bernard Holland of IT brands Juliette a thief of his heat tape; Robert Sims of Judicial pushes Judge Meadows’s man, Paul Billings; in the Mids Jahns meets Juliette’s estranged father, Dr. Pete Nichols. Jahns consults her old friend Martha Walker and offers Juliette the job. Juliette refuses until Holston’s badge reaches her with TRUTH scratched on its back; her price is the first shutdown of the main generator, which Mechanical restarts after she nearly drowns in its pressure chamber. In the dark, Jahns and Marnes confess their love; back up top, Jahns signs Juliette’s appointment and collapses, blood in her mouth.
From Wool:Proper Gauge, nearly beat for beat: the descent, the doctor, the “power holiday”, the old friends’ love, the poison. The book’s Billings is a Judicial clerk put forward by Bernard, and its Jahns dies at Dr. Nichols’s ward, understanding too late that she drank from Marnes’s canteen. The badge’s word is the series’, and so is Walker as a woman: “I wanted Juliette to have a mother figure,” Yost has said.
S1 · 6 Truth on the Back Mayor Ruth Jahns has walked down all 144 levels to offer Juliette the sheriff’s job. Juliette says no, until Holston’s badge reaches her with a word scratched into its back, the signal he promised: TRUTH. Her price is a blackout, so Mechanical can strip the failing generator. Wool’s Juliette strikes the same bargain, a “power holiday”; the word on the badge is the series’.S1 · 7 In the Blackout With the main generator shut down for the first time, the silo goes dark, and for a moment its screens flash a green outside that few people notice. Far below, Juliette nearly drowns in the pressure chamber before the power comes back. In the dark, Jahns and Marnes at last admit what they feel for each other. Back up top she signs Juliette’s appointment, and collapses.
Episode 4
Truth
Jahns is dead of rat poison, and Marnes believes it was meant for him: they had swapped flasks. Bernard, now mayor pro tem, swears Juliette in over a copy of the Pact. Flashbacks show her at thirteen, after the deaths of her mother Hanna and brother Jacob, talking her way into Mechanical. A file Holston left for his successor holds his note: double the flowers in front of the mirror. Late one night in the cafeteria she meets Lukas Kyle of IT. Then Marnes is attacked in his apartment, while Juliette finds Holston’s hidden file on George.
From Wool: the opening of Casting Off: Bernard as acting mayor, the canteen, Lukas in the dark cafeteria. The book’s Juliette also lost a baby brother, Nicholas, when she was thirteen, and her mother a week later; the series renames him Jacob, names her mother Hanna, and plays it out. The clerk Sandy, the flower note and the widower Patrick Kennedy are the series’.
S1 · 8 Sworn on the Pact Jahns is dead of rat poison, and Marnes believes it was meant for him: they had swapped flasks. Bernard Holland, head of IT and now mayor pro tem, swears Juliette in over a copy of the Pact. The swapped canteens are Wool’s too, but the book’s reader has watched Bernard’s staff fill them; the series’ audience will not learn who did for four more episodes.
Episode 5
The Janitor’s Boy
Marnes is found dead, beaten with his own shotgun, and Sims installs Billings as Juliette’s chief deputy. Evidence against Kennedy turns out to be planted; Juliette chases the planter, Judicial’s Doug Trumbull, who shoves her over a rail, where she hangs on. Then, outside a door marked JANITORIAL, Sims tells Trumbull of his own father, a janitor with a secret job, tests his would-be shadow’s loyalty and pushes him over the railing. Trumbull is blamed for both murders. Lukas shows Juliette the lights he charts on the night screen: stars, though no one in the silo knows it. Martha judges George’s camcorder beyond anything the Pact allows.
From Wool:Casting Off. The book’s Marnes is found hanged, his death left looking like suicide, and Bernard, not Sims, installs Billings. Wool’s Sims is IT’s head of security, a large man Bernard throws out later; the series moves him to Judicial and gives him the killing and the room behind the janitor’s door.
S1 · 9 Lights in the Night Screen Lukas Kyle of IT spends his nights in the empty cafeteria charting the “lights” that show on the great screen, and now he shows Juliette how they turn in a great circle. They are stars, though no one in the silo knows it. Wool’s Lukas maps the same stars on the same screen, and in the book he and Juliette fall for each other fast; the series slows them while George’s ghost stands between.S1 · 10 The Janitor’s Door Outside a door marked JANITORIAL, Robert Sims tells Judicial’s Doug Trumbull about his own father, supposedly a janitor, who held a secret job vital to the silo, then tests his would-be shadow’s loyalty. Then he pushes him over the rail, and Trumbull takes the blame for both murders. Wool has a Sims, IT’s large head of security; the series makes him Judicial’s enforcer.S1 · 11 Martha’s Verdict Martha Walker has studied the camcorder from George’s stash, and her verdict unsettles Juliette: it is more advanced than anything the Pact allows. Martha is Juliette’s teacher and the nearest thing she has to a mother. Wool’s Walker is an old man, a recluse in his workshop; Yost made Walker a woman so that Juliette would have “a mother figure”.
Episode 6
The Relic
Juliette plants a relic in Trumbull’s flat so it can be “found”, and uses it to reach a supposed relic dealer, Regina Jackson, George’s former lover. Bernard closes the case. Billings, made complicit, is furious, but Juliette knows he hides the Syndrome, a tremor that should bar him from office. Regina admits she gave up the drive’s secret under threat, and hands Juliette what George traded her: a children’s travel book about Georgia. Juliette reads it at home while a surveillance team watches her on sharp, modern screens.
From Wool: almost nothing; the book’s sheriff follows Holston’s computer trail through IT instead. Relics as contraband, Regina, the Syndrome, the travel book and the watchers are the series’.
S1 · 12 Amazing Adventures From the lining of her doormat, the relic dealer Regina Jackson gives Juliette what George traded her: a children’s travel book about Georgia, full of photographs of forests and animals nobody in the silo has seen. Juliette reads it alone at night, and in a hidden room of sharp, modern screens, a surveillance team watches her read. Relics, Regina and the book are all the series’.
Episode 7
The Flamekeepers
A name in the travel book leads Juliette to Gloria, kept sedated in long-term care on Judge Meadows’s order. Lukas tries to kiss Juliette; she turns him away. Her estranged father brings Gloria out of the sedative, and Gloria tells of the Flamekeepers, a secret society keeping the past alive, its members dying one by one; Juliette’s mother was close to them. Gloria remembers Holston setting flowers before her mirror and fussing with her vent: the cameras, Juliette realizes, are behind the mirrors. She covers Gloria’s, opens the vent, and is gone with George’s drive before Sims’s raiders arrive.
From Wool: nothing directly; the society, Gloria, Meadows and the mirror cameras are the series’. In the book Juliette and Lukas fall for each other fast; Yost held Lukas back while George filled the frame.
S1 · 13 The Mirror Is an Eye Brought out of her sedation with the help of Juliette’s father, Gloria Hildebrandt tells of the Flamekeepers, a secret society keeping the past alive. She remembers Holston setting flowers before her mirror and fussing with her vent, and Juliette understands: the cameras are behind the mirrors. She drapes Gloria’s in a blanket, opens the vent and finds George’s drive. The Flamekeepers are the series’ own.
Episode 8
Hanna
In flashback, Juliette’s mother Hanna builds a forbidden magnifier to find a hole in a sick rabbit’s heart, like the one that killed Jacob. In the present Juliette arrests Sims for an illegal search and reads his files: Judicial’s cameras, not her father, betrayed Hanna’s magnifier. Juliette and Pete make peace; Hanna’s defiance and her suicide followed Jacob’s death. Then Bernard lets slip that he knows about the drive: he runs the silo, and Jahns and Marnes died on his account. He and Sims arrest her and announce that she has asked to go out. As Billings, shaking, leads her up the stair, she goes over the rail.
From Wool: the turn of Casting Off, Juliette arrested and sent to clean. The book’s reader has suspected Bernard since the canteens were filled at IT; the series kept him a mild mentor until now. The book’s mother, too, killed herself after the baby died; the magnifier, the rabbit and the leap are the series’.
S1 · 14 The Man in Charge For four episodes Bernard has played Juliette’s mild ally against Judicial. Walking her past a checkpoint, he lets slip that he knows about the drive: he runs the silo, and Jahns and Marnes died on his account. With Sims he arrests her and announces that she has asked to go out. Wool’s reader suspects Bernard from the second novella on; the series kept him hidden until here.S1 · 15 Over the Rail Billings, his hand shaking with the Syndrome he hides from the silo, is leading his sheriff up the stair to her cleaning when Juliette grabs her bag and goes over the rail into the open shaft. The Syndrome is the series’ addition to Billings, and the leap is the series’ too: Wool’s Juliette is arrested in Mechanical by a weeping deputy and climbs to the airlock without a fight.
Episode 9
The Getaway
Juliette lands hard on a bridge below and gets away. She hides in Sims’s own apartment, cuffs his wife Camille to a kitchen pipe and opens the drive: a file is waiting, and George’s face fills the screen. Camille frees herself and lets her go. Billings finds the travel book, keeps one page and burns the rest; Bernard arrests Lukas. At Patrick Kennedy’s, with Danny, an IT man who can disguise where the drive is, Juliette hears all of George’s message: he found a door in the flooded cavern, about fifteen feet high, and could not open it. Watch “Jane Carmody Cleaning”, he tells her. It shows green land, and birds.
From Wool: none of it; Wool’s condemned sheriff never runs.
S1 · 16 Start Here Bruised from her fall, Juliette hides in Sims’s own apartment, cuffs his wife Camille to a kitchen pipe and opens the drive. A file is waiting for her, and George’s face fills the screen. Camille will free herself and let Juliette go; at Patrick Kennedy’s she hears the rest of George’s message, about a door in the flooded cavern and a cleaner’s footage of green hills.
Episode 10
Outside
From the silo-high trash chute, Juliette gets the green footage onto the silo’s screens; Bernard blacks them out. Cornered in the Down Deep, Juliette takes his deal: she goes out with no hearing, Mechanical is spared, and he shows her what became of George, footage of him under arrest choosing to drop from the stair rail rather than be questioned. Lukas is sentenced to the mines. Martha, who has not left her workshop in more than twenty years, goes to Supply about heat tape. Outside, the visor shows Carmody’s green; Juliette holds the wool to the camera and lets it fall. Where the display shows a rock, her hand finds Holston, and she leaves him his badge. The tape holds, the display dies, and she climbs out of the crater into a grey ruin dotted with dozens of craters like her own.
From Wool: the end of Casting Off and the start of The Unraveling. Kept: Walker’s quiet favor with Supply and a note that ends “they’re good in Supply”; the lie in the visor and the bodies it disguises as rocks; the refusal to clean; the walk out of sight. Martha’s note says “The truth is I love you” where Walker’s said “The truth is a joke.” Changed: the book’s Bernard later admits George was murdered and makes Lukas his shadow, and the book’s Juliette finds one dead neighbor over the hill, learning only later how many silos there are.
S1 · 17 The Footage of George Caught in the Down Deep, Juliette takes Bernard’s bargain: she goes out with no hearing, Mechanical is spared, and he shows her what happened to George. The footage shows George, under arrest, getting to the stair rail and choosing to drop rather than be questioned. In Wool George’s death stays a murder, and late in the book Bernard admits it.S1 · 18 The Wool, Dropped Martha, out of her workshop for the first time in more than twenty years, has been to Supply about heat tape; her note reads “The truth is I love you” where Wool’s Walker wrote “The truth is a joke.” Outside, the visor shows the green of Carmody’s footage. Juliette holds the wool up to the camera and lets it fall. Where the display shows a rock, her hand finds Holston, and she leaves him his badge.S1 · 19 The Field of Silos The tape holds and the display flickers out: grey dust, a dead tree, a broken city on the horizon. Juliette climbs out of the crater, out of the camera’s sight, and sees dozens of craters like her own, each a silo. Wool’s Juliette walks over the hill too, but finds one dead neighbor heaped with its own people, and learns how many silos there are later, from the man she finds living inside.
Continuity notes
Season 1 ends where Casting Off ends and The Unraveling begins: Juliette alive over the hill. The book’s third part closes on Bernard watching her go and calling Silo 1; the series closes on her view of the craters.
Dead by the finale: Allison, Holston, Jahns, Marnes, George (before the present), Trumbull; Hanna and Jacob in the past. In Wool, Marnes is found hanged rather than beaten, and George’s death is a murder Bernard later admits; on screen, footage shows George dropping from the rail by choice.
Lukas: in the book, Bernard’s chosen shadow after Juliette leaves; on screen, sentenced to the mines in the finale.
Billings: the book’s Peter, a Judicial clerk made deputy; the series’ Paul, chief deputy with the Syndrome, granted an exemption at the end.
Walker: the book’s old recluse leaves his room after Juliette’s cleaning to tell Mechanical what he did for her suit; the series’ Martha leaves her workshop before it, to get her the right tape.
The other silos: Wool’s Juliette finds Silo 17 just over the hill and learns of the rest from its survivor; season 1 shows her dozens at once. Silo 17 itself, its survivor, and Mechanical’s uprising are season 2.
Holston’s badge ends where it began: Juliette asks for it as her last request and leaves it on his body on the hill.
