A figure in a hazard suit looks down a brown hillside at a buried entrance ringed by thousands of skeletons, a tattered flag on a pole above it.
Over the hill, Silo 17: its people walked out into the air, and the ones who tried to get back in never did.

Silo, season 2

Ten episodes from the second half of Wool: Juliette alone in a dead silo, and Silo 18 going to war without her.

Season 2 of Apple TV+’s Silo premiered on November 15, 2024 and ran weekly to January 17, 2025: ten more episodes run by Graham Yost, covering the second half of Wool, the novellas The Unraveling and The Stranded. It splits in two the way the book’s last part does, whose chapters are tagged SILO 17 and SILO 18. The first episode is all Juliette, alone and nearly wordless in a dead silo; the second is all Silo 18; after that the series cross-cuts.

“Season 2, especially the Juliette story, is close to what happens in the book,” Yost said before it aired, and its bones are Wool’s: the ramp of corpses, the man in hiding who calls himself Solo, the dive, the feral young, the walk home and the fire. But the series makes one structural choice that changes everything around them: “We really didn’t want any contact between the silos.” The book’s radio is gone, so Silo 18 fights its war believing Juliette dead, and her return can end it. Around that the season invents a great deal: Judge Meadows’s bargain, a coded letter, a voice beneath the silo, and a rebellion that wins. It closes with a coda in Washington drawn from Shift’s first chapter.

Each episode below says what it draws from the books and what the series changed or invented. The frames paint the series’ version of each moment, its colourful ruin of a Silo 17 and its clinical vault, in the walk’s own charcoal; they show characters, never performers.

Episode 1

The Engineer

Some thirty-five years earlier, Silo 17’s rebels storm IT, and their sheriff leads the people up the ramp and out into the air, without suits, under a flag. In the present Juliette crosses the waste to that flag and finds thousands of dead fanned around the entrance. Inside, her air running out, she smashes in her helmet and finds she can breathe. LIES is painted across the cafeteria’s display; below, the bridge to IT is blown and the lower levels are flooded. She nearly drowns, then follows music to IT’s round vault door. A slot slides open on a pair of eyes, and a man promises to kill her if she tries the door again. Flashbacks show her as a young teen, new to Mechanical, learning the trash line beside young Shirley.

From the books: The Unraveling has the ramp of bodies, Juliette cutting herself out of the suit, the dead silo, and a wild-haired man at a stuck door on level thirty-four. Shift tells 17’s fall from inside, in 2312, ended when Silo 1 shuts the silo down. The book’s 17 is flooded below too; the march, the blown bridge and the threat at the door are the series’.

A sheriff in a brown shirt leads a crowd up a concrete ramp into grey daylight, a flag held high on a pole above his head.
S2 · 1 The March Out Decades before Juliette comes, Silo 17’s rebels have won their war with IT. Sure the outside is safe, though he and his wife both have doubts, the silo’s sheriff leads his people up the ramp and into the open air, without suits, under a flag. The cold open is the series’ own: in Shift, 17 falls in 2312 with its airlock open, and Silo 1 shuts it down.
A woman with a flashlight stands before a great round steel door in a decaying concrete hall as a narrow slot in the door slides open on a pair of eyes.
S2 · 2 Eyes in the Door Juliette has come down through a dead silo of faded murals, moss and green half-light, nearly drowning on the way, and followed a song to IT’s great round vault door. She cannot open it. A slot slides open on a pair of eyes, and a man tells her he understands why she tried, but if she tries again he will kill her. Wool’s Solo first appears at a stuck door on level thirty-four.
Episode 2

Order

In Silo 18, Bernard watches Juliette’s helmet feed reach the other silo and opens The Order to a page that tells IT, after a failed cleaning, to prepare for war. A curfew follows, and the deputies answer to Sims. Down Deep, Martha Walker turns a fire hose on a furious crowd; later she is arrested, and in the jail finds her ex-wife Carla McLain, head of Supply, locked up for smuggling Juliette the good tape. Bernard tells the silo Juliette was a hero and is dead; Judge Meadows backs him, for a price. She wants a suit with good tape: she wants to go out.

From the books: The Unraveling has Bernard’s rage, Walker’s favours with Supply and Mechanical’s anger. The Order is a book in Wool too; its war page is the series’, as are Meadows and the ex-wives: Wool’s Walker is an old man, its McLain an old woman who keeps dogs.

A very tall man in spectacles stands alone in a clean, brightly lit vault, a thick book open in his hands, a monitor behind him showing a hillside of bones.
S2 · 3 Prepare for War In IT’s vault, Bernard Holland watches Juliette’s helmet camera carry her past the dead to another silo before the feed cuts out. He opens The Order to a page that tells IT, after a failed cleaning, to prepare for war, and soon Silo 18 has a curfew and its deputies answer to Sims. Wool’s Bernard rages at her survival too; the war page and the curfew are the series’.
An old woman with lenses on her grey hair braces a gushing fire hose toward an angry crowd while a big bearded man and a woman with tattooed arms turn toward her.
S2 · 4 The Fire Hose Down Deep, Mechanical boils over at Juliette’s cleaning, and the crowd will not be calmed until Martha Walker turns a fire hose on it. Then Deputy Hank leads her away in handcuffs, and in the jail she finds her ex-wife, Carla McLain, head of Supply, locked up for smuggling Juliette the good tape. Wool’s Walker is an old man; the ex-wives are the series’.
Episode 3

Solo

Through the slot the man tells Juliette there are fifty silos, that 17’s people walked out smiling, and that he was the shadow of Russell, 17’s head of IT, ordered to keep everyone out. He suggests a firefighter’s suit for the walk home, but will not help fetch it from the flooded levels; when she walks away, he finds the nerve to come out. In 18, Patrick Kennedy, doing Sims a favour in return for a drug to forget his dead wife, throws a firebomb at the deputies facing a protest led by Juliette’s friend Shirley, and in the chaos the young engineer Cooper, once Juliette’s shadow, is shot dead.

From the books: The Unraveling’s Solo, alone thirty-four years in a hovel of empty cans, talks freely and shows her on an old map how small a silo is; the series’ hides behind his door and lies about who he is. The firefighter’s suit, the firebomb and Cooper’s death are the series’.

A long-haired, bearded man in layered scavenged clothes and a knitted cap steps blinking out of a round vault door toward a woman with a flashlight.
S2 · 5 Out of the Vault Through the slot, the man in the vault has told Juliette that there are fifty silos, and that he was the IT shadow, ordered to keep everyone out. He leaves her chicken stew, suggests a firefighter’s suit for the walk home, and will not help her fetch it. When she walks away, he finds the nerve to come out. Yost puts it at “roughly 35 years” alone; Wool’s Solo says thirty-four.
A wiry man in a patched brown jacket draws back his arm with a burning bottle while a line of deputies faces a crowd in a narrow, pipe-lined corridor.
S2 · 6 The Firebomb Shirley’s protest down deep demands the release of a worker arrested for painting Juliette Lives on a wall. Patrick Kennedy, doing Sims a favour in return for a drug to forget his dead wife, throws a firebomb at the deputies, and in the chaos the young engineer Cooper, once Juliette’s shadow, is shot dead. The provocation and the death are the series’ own; Bernard’s war has its first casualty.
Episode 4

The Harmonium

To breathe through fifty feet of hose underwater, Juliette builds a pump from a harmonium’s bellows and goes under for the fire gear. In 18, Bernard gives Meadows dinner instead of a suit, and poison. As she dies he lets her see an old-world forest through a headset, and she tells him of a coded letter on Juliette’s stolen drive from Salvador Quinn, head of IT during a rebellion 140 years before. Mechanical’s leaders, let in to see her, find her with a knife in her chest, and Sims rouses the silo against them.

From the books: The Stranded has the dive gear and Solo on an air compressor; the harmonium, and a dive this early, are the series’. Wool has a poisoning too, the canteen meant for Marnes that kills Mayor Jahns, which Juliette lays at Bernard’s door; Meadows, the forest and Quinn are the series’.

A bearded man in a knitted cap pumps the pedals of an old harmonium while a woman kneeling beside it fits a long coiled hose to its bellows.
S2 · 7 The Harmonium To breathe through fifty feet of hose underwater, Juliette needs a pump, and Solo, chattering about circuses and Jules Verne, suggests a harmonium. She builds one from its bellows and a piano’s parts and goes under for the fire gear, nearly drowning but making it there and back. The Stranded has Solo working an air compressor for her dive; the harmonium, and a dive this early, are the series’.
An older woman in a long dark coat sits at a candlelit table with a glowing headset over her eyes, while a very tall man in spectacles watches her from across it.
S2 · 8 A Forest for Meadows Meadows asked Bernard for a suit; he gives her dinner instead, and poison. As she dies he lets her see a forest of the old world through a headset, and she tells him of a coded letter on Juliette’s stolen drive, from Salvador Quinn, head of IT in a rebellion 140 years before. Bernard and Sims stage her body to frame Mechanical. Wool has a poisoning too, the canteen meant for Marnes that kills Mayor Jahns; Meadows and Quinn are the series’.
Episode 5

Descent

Bernard makes Sims Judge in Meadows’s place, a demotion in Sims’s eyes. Carla is captured, but Camille quietly lets Knox, head of Mechanical, and Shirley slip away from a mob, and they get back down deep disguised as porters. Bernard pulls Lukas up from the mines to repair Juliette’s smashed drive, and on it Lukas finds Quinn’s love letter, which turns into code. In 17, Solo says the water will reach his vault in ten months and asks Juliette to fix the pump. In the silo’s staff records she finds the shadow he claims to be, with another man’s face. Then she collapses: the cut on her arm is infected.

From the books: The Stranded has Juliette reckoning the years of pumping it will take to dry 17’s Mechanical. Shift’s Jimmy renames himself Solo but never pretends to be another man; the false identity is the series’, with Judge Sims and the letter.

A man in a black leather jacket stands stiffly before a very tall man in spectacles while a composed woman in dark tailored clothes holds out a thick bound book.
S2 · 9 Judge Sims Sims wanted to be Bernard’s shadow. Instead Bernard makes him Judge in Meadows’s place, a demotion in Sims’s eyes, and Camille brings the Pact to make it formal. Then she stops a mob from beating Knox and Shirley on the stairs and lets them slip away. Wool’s Sims is IT’s head of security, and Camille is the series’ own, already playing both sides.
Episode 6

Barricades

Bernard blockades the lower levels. Dr. Pete Nichols takes a bullet out of Patrick Kennedy, who tells Sheriff Billings he threw the firebomb for Sims. Knox and Shirley push the raiders’ barricade ten floors up the stair and take a farm level. Billings, his tremor gone, hears Mechanical’s side, believes it, and radios Bernard to open an inquiry into Meadows’s death; Bernard cuts the radios. Lukas’s work on the cipher makes him Bernard’s shadow. In 17, Juliette wakes, nursed through the fever by Solo, and finds he has hidden her suit until she fixes the pump.

From the books: Mechanical’s armed march up the stairs is Wool’s. Its Peter Billings stays on IT’s side and is shot in the assault; the series’ Paul crosses over. Wool’s Bernard makes Lukas his shadow at once, and its Dr. Nichols is a nursery doctor; Pete’s part in the war is the series’.

A deputy in a dark jacket holds a radio handset steady while an old woman, a big bearded man and a woman with tattooed arms watch in a cramped room of pipes.
S2 · 10 A Steady Hand Paul Billings has read the Pact, and heard Patrick Kennedy confess that he threw the firebomb for Sims. Behind Mechanical’s lines he hears out Walker, Knox and Shirley, believes them, and radios Bernard to open a formal inquiry into Meadows’s death, his hand steady, the tremor gone. Bernard cuts the radios. Wool’s Billings stays on IT’s side, is shot in the assault, and in the end sends Bernard out to clean.
Episode 7

The Dive

In the vault, the Legacy, a voice and a computer, verifies Lukas as shadow and opens a room of old-world relics. Mechanical fires a rocket of leaflets up the shaft accusing IT of lies, then cuts the power: only IT’s lights stay on. Lukas finds that Quinn’s code is a book cipher that needs a book more than 140 years old, and Bernard hands him Meadows’s The Wizard of Oz. Walker switches on one of IT’s cameras to ask after Carla, and Bernard sees a lever. In 17, Juliette dives to restart the pump, breathing through a hose while Solo works the pump above. The air fails; she starts the pump anyway, and surfaces to blood and no Solo.

From the books: The Stranded has the dive, Solo on the compressor, the hose going limp and Solo falling silent, though the book’s Juliette goes down in a suit and helmet, weights strapped below her knees. In the books the old world survives as hidden books; the speaking computer, the rocket and the cipher are the series’.

A woman in makeshift goggles, a hose at her mouth, pulls herself down a drowned spiral stair through green-black water toward a pump far below.
S2 · 11 The Dive Juliette cannot swim, and the drowned levels are the only way to the pump that might keep the water from Solo’s vault. Breathing through a hose while Solo works the pump above and holds her rope, she goes down past the drowned landings. The air line fails; she starts the pump anyway, and surfaces to blood on the stair and no Solo. The Stranded has this dive too, in a suit with weights at her knees: the hose goes limp, and Solo falls silent.
Episode 8

The Book of Quinn

Bent by the bends, Juliette meets a figure dressed as a raider who says Solo is dead and shoots her with an arrow; she tracks her attacker to three young people. In 18, Bernard offers Walker Carla’s safety for her help, and Walker becomes his informant; Mechanical’s next raid walks into an ambush. The Oz book leads Lukas to Quinn’s descendants; with Quinn’s own copy of the Pact, which Meadows had got from them, he decodes the letter: the game, it warns, is rigged. Bernard gives him IT’s version: Quinn destroyed the records and drugged the water so the silo would forget, ending rebellions that had come every twenty years.

From the books: The Stranded has feral children who survived in 17’s farms and struck Solo down. Cyclical uprisings are the books’ too, but Shift’s forgetting drugs are the founders’ design, run from Silo 1. The arrow and Quinn are the series’; and Wool’s Walker listens in on IT, the reverse of informing for it.

In a dark, vine-hung corridor a figure in patched armour and a helmet draws a bow on a woman gripping an axe.
S2 · 12 The Raider with the Bow Juliette has taken an axe from the stairs, then gone back under the water to ride out the bends. Now a figure dressed as a raider tells her Solo is dead, and looses an arrow into her. She patches the wound and hunts her attacker down to three young people. The Stranded has feral children who struck Solo down; the series makes them grown, armed, and led by an invented Audrey.
An old woman with lenses on her wild grey hair reaches across a bare table toward an older woman in a patched coat in a cold, plain room.
S2 · 13 Leverage Bernard has found his lever. He offers Martha Walker her ex-wife, and Carla’s safety, for her help against Mechanical; Walker becomes his informant, keeps her workshop camera on, and is allowed to see Carla. Mechanical’s raid on Supply walks into an ambush, and when Carla learns the price she will not forgive her. Wool’s Walker does the reverse, listening in on IT for Mechanical.
Episode 9

The Safeguard

The young survivors have watched Juliette since she came: they cut her rope in the first episode, and Rick threw her the container that saved her. They hold Solo for the vault’s code, and their leader, Audrey, gives Juliette until her baby cries again to open it; the outcast Hope, whom the others call “Eater”, helps her. Then Solo tells the truth. He is Jimmy Conroy, son of Russell, 17’s head of IT; at twelve he would not open the vault door, and watched the sheriff shoot his father. Years later two intruders shot him, and he shut them in to die: they were these young people’s parents. Peace made, Jimmy lets them all into his vault for ice cream and music. In 18, Lukas and Shirley go down to the bottom of the silo, where the deep water is only knee-deep. At a round door a voice warns Lukas that if he tells anyone what he learns, the Safeguard will be initiated.

From the books: Shift’s Pact is Jimmy’s own story: the IT man’s son locked in the server room in 2312, who sees his father shot outside the steel door and then, with the men threatening his mother, gets the code wrong; men who break in later die at his hand. The series makes him a Conroy (the book’s Parker), twelve rather than sixteen, and the intruders the survivors’ parents. Wool’s children include a Rickson; Audrey’s armed band and the voice in the tunnel are the series’.

A bearded man in a knitted cap holds out a bowl to a young couple with a baby, a wary young woman and a watching woman in a cluttered, lamplit vault hung with paper birds.
S2 · 14 Jimmy Opens the Vault The truth is out: Solo is Jimmy Conroy, son of 17’s head of IT, who at twelve would not open this door and watched the sheriff shoot his father. Years later two intruders shot him, and he shut them in to die; they were these young people’s parents. With peace made, Jimmy lets them all into his vault for ice cream and music. Shift’s Jimmy is a Parker, sixteen when 17 falls, and he too sees his father shot at the door.
A young man stands in knee-deep black water in a low concrete tunnel before a great round steel door, lamp raised, while a woman waits far behind him at the tunnel’s mouth.
S2 · 15 Knee-Deep Lukas has won Shirley over with the news that Juliette may be alive, and together they go down to the bottom of the silo, where the deep water turns out to be knee-deep. In a tunnel stands a round door, and a voice: only Quinn, Meadows and George Wilkins have come this far, and if he tells anyone what he learns, the Safeguard will be initiated. Tunnel and voice are the series’ own.
Episode 10

Into the Fire

The rebels’ real plan is a bomb on the stair. When its timer falls off, Pete Nichols sets it off by hand and dies, cutting the silo in two and trapping Bernard’s raiders below; the deputies up top turn, and the prisoners walk free. Lukas whispers to Bernard what the tunnel told him, that the silo can be poisoned at any moment, and resigns. A broken Bernard makes Sims his shadow, and in the vault the Legacy keeps only Camille. In 17, Solo tests the firefighter’s suit for Juliette underwater, and she promises to come back for him. She walks home, cleans the lens, and holds up a warning to the cafeteria, where Patrick Kennedy has been rousing a crowd to go outside. Inside the ramp’s door she finds Bernard, suited and armed, going out for a moment of peace, and tells him she knows how to stop the Safeguard. The doors close, and the fire comes.

Then, in Yost’s words, “from the sound of flames to the sound of rain”: Washington, D.C., today. In a crowded bar a freshman congressman from Georgia, Daniel Keene, meets a journalist, Helen Drew, and leaves her a PEZ dispenser with a yellow duck.

From the books: The Stranded has Juliette crossing back, a suited figure in the airlock as the doors grind shut, and the fire: Bernard, sent out by Peter Billings in Lukas’s place, burns, and she survives badly burned. On screen Bernard goes of his own will. The book’s uprising is crushed, Knox among the dead; the series’ wins. The coda draws on Shift’s first chapter, Washington in 2049, where Donald Keene, a freshman congressman from Georgia, is married to Helen. The series renames him (“we just didn’t want anyone named Donald in that role,” Yost said) and makes Helen a journalist he meets on what he took for a date.

A grey-bearded man in a long pale coat kneels by a bundle of wired canisters on an iron stair, looking up at a deputy who backs away up the steps.
S2 · 16 The Doctor on the Stair The rebels’ real plan is a bomb on the stair. When its timer falls off, Dr. Pete Nichols gives Hank a message for his daughter, should she ever come home, and crosses the wires by hand. The blast cuts the stair, splitting the silo in two and trapping Bernard’s raiders below. Wool’s Dr. Nichols is a nursery doctor, alive at the book’s end; this arc, and this death, are the series’.
Seen from behind, a figure in a bulky orange protective suit stands on a grey hill before a squat camera housing, holding up a pale cloth sign to its lens.
S2 · 17 Not Safe Patrick Kennedy has a crowd ready to walk out into a world he is sure is livable. Then the lens on the great screen is wiped clean, and there is Juliette, alive, back from Silo 17, holding up a sign: NOT SAFE DO NOT COME OUT. The cafeteria cheers. Yost wanted her coming over the hill to end the rebellion; in Wool, her voice reaches home by radio long before she does.
In a steel airlock hung with plastic sheeting, a woman in a bulky orange suit and clear-visored helmet faces a very tall man in a white hazard suit as heavy doors slide shut behind them.
S2 · 18 Into the Fire Juliette forces the ramp’s great door with a crowbar and meets Bernard, suited and armed, going out for a moment of peace. She tells him she knows how to stop the Safeguard. They scuffle, the airlock doors close on them both, and the fire comes. In Wool Billings sends Bernard out in Lukas’s place; she throws Solo’s heat-tape blanket over them both, and he burns rather than be saved. The season stops in the flames.
In a crowded bar on a rainy night, a man in a navy suit hands a dark-haired woman a small toy candy dispenser topped with a duck’s head.
S2 · 19 Rain in Washington The flames cut to rain, and to Washington today. A freshman congressman from Georgia, Daniel Keene, meets Helen Drew, a journalist, on what he thought was a date; she wants to know if the U.S. will strike back at Iran for a dirty-bomb attack. Leaving, he gives her a PEZ dispenser with a yellow duck, the relic George once gave Juliette. “That is the PEZ dispenser,” Yost said.

Continuity notes

  • Juliette and Bernard end the season shut together in Silo 18’s airlock as the fire comes, and the series withholds who lives. In Wool, Billings sends Bernard out in Lukas’s place and he burns; Juliette survives, badly burned, and is made mayor.
  • The uprising wins on screen: the stair blown, the silo cut in two, Bernard’s raiders trapped below, the deputies up top turned by Billings, the prisoners freed. Wool’s rising is crushed, with Knox among its many dead.
  • Knox and Shirley live, and kiss in episode 6. The book’s Knox dies in the fighting, and its Shirly (the books’ spelling) is married to Marck.
  • Lukas is Bernard’s shadow, has heard the Safeguard’s warning, and resigns. The book’s Lukas becomes shadow at once and talks to Juliette by radio every night.
  • Sims ends as Bernard’s shadow, and the Legacy has kept Camille, not him, in the vault. Wool’s Sims is IT’s security chief, thrown out by Bernard.
  • Billings walks free, his deputies loyal; the book’s Billings is shot in the shoulder in the assault on IT.
  • Martha Walker and Carla McLain: Walker informed for Bernard to save Carla, and Carla will not forgive her. The book’s Walker eavesdrops on IT for Mechanical.
  • Dead this season, all in the series’ own arcs: Cooper (episode 3), Meadows (episode 4), Pete Nichols (episode 10).
  • Silo 17: Jimmy Conroy, Audrey, Rick, Hope and two small children are alive, the vault open, the pump running, and Juliette has promised to come back. The book’s 17 holds Solo and a band of feral children, among them Rickson and Elise, who return in Dust.
  • The Safeguard: on screen, a poison line into the silo that “they” can open at any time, guarded by the voice in the tunnel. In Shift, Silo 1 shuts failed silos down, and 17 was one.
  • Washington: Daniel Keene and Helen Drew are the series’ versions of Shift’s Donald Keene and his wife Helen. In the book they are married; on screen their first scene is what he took for a date. Season 3 takes up their story, and the airlock.
